Security and Privacy in the Smart Home: Local Control, Updates and KVKK

A smart home is secure provided you know who sees your data. A checklist.

Smart home devices are connected to the internet, which means risk if not set up correctly. The good news is that a few basic measures remove most of that risk. This article is general information.

1. Prefer local control

When scenes run on the device's own controller the system works even if the internet is down. It also reduces how much of your data goes to the cloud. Before buying, ask: 'Does this device work without the internet?'

2. Set up a separate network

Putting smart home devices on a guest network or a separate VLAN protects your other devices if one is compromised. Most modern routers offer this.

3. Strong passwords and multi-factor authentication

Use unique, long passwords for each device and app. Always enable multi-factor authentication on the remote access account. Change default usernames and passwords at installation.

4. Do not neglect updates

Device software receives regular security patches. For customers with a support subscription, Ayvan applies updates remotely with approval and notifies the user.

5. Cameras and microphones

Place cameras only where needed (entrance, garden). Cameras are not used in bedrooms and bathrooms. Recordings should preferably be stored locally and not go to the cloud. With voice assistants you should be able to switch the microphone off with a physical button.

6. KVKK and data

If a camera at home is for purely personal use the scope of KVKK narrows, but angles that capture an apartment entrance or a neighbour's balcony may cause problems. In commercial spaces a notice sign and a retention period are required. Make sure your service provider does not use your data for marketing.

7. Remote support access

Instead of giving permanent access to the firm providing technical support, open a time-limited, approved session. Ayvan logs all remote access and never connects without your approval.

Quick checklist

  • Is there local operation?
  • Are the devices on a separate network?
  • Is multi-factor authentication on?
  • Has an update been applied in the last six months?
  • Are recordings stored locally?

For support subscribers we provide a free assessment of your home's security once a year.

Questions to ask when buying

When choosing a smart home company or device, ask: Where is data stored? Will the system keep working if the manufacturer shuts down? For how many years will security patches be provided? How is the remote access account protected? Is there a written data processing policy? Stay away from solutions with unclear answers.

Remember: privacy is not a feature but a design principle. A system that does not collect your data is always safer than one that collects it and tries to protect it.
